Valence electrons


The valence electrons are the electrons in the last energy level of an atom. For representative elements, the group number is the number of valence electrons. For example, Group 1A elements have 1 valence electron; Group 2A elements have 2 valence electrons... Group 7A have 7 valence electrons, etc. The valence electrons are shown in electron dot diagrams.
