The Chemistry Book:About
The Chemistry Book is a wiki written for high school students located in California or students using the textbook entitled World of Chemistry by Zumdahl, Zumdahl, and DeCoste. All materials were developed to correlate with the Chemistry Content Standards for California.
The course is divided into six units.
Unit 1 – Introduction to Chemistry (Chapters 1 & 5) Aug. 10 – Aug. 28
Unit 2 – Atomic and Molecular Structure (Chapters 2, 3, 11, & 19) Aug. 31 – Oct. 2
Unit 3 – Chemical Bonds, Biochemistry (Chapters 12, 20, & 21) Oct. 5 – Nov. 6
Unit 4 – Conservation of Matter & Stoichiometry (Chapters 4, 6, & 7) Nov. 9 – Dec. 18
Unit 5 – Kinetics and Thermodynamics (Chapters 10, 13, 14) Jan. 11 – Feb. 12
Unit 6 – Chemical Reactions (Chapters 15, 16, & 17) Feb. 15 – Mar. 19
Unit 0 helps students develop the skills necessary to succeed during the course. Unit 0 emphasizes the math and measurement skills. Yet this is a perfect time to introduce students to the investigation and experimentation standards. Units 1-5 match the reporting clusters developed by the State of California; for example, unit 1 focuses on the atomic and molecular structure topics in chemistry.
The pacing plan (instructional days) provides enough time for the introduction of each standard prior to the STAR. Additional time is provided for a review of the five units.
Layne P. Heiny, Ed.D. earned his doctorate from the University of Phoenix, School of Advanced Studies in 2009. His interests include the behaviors and interactions of new teachers. His dissertation is entitled, Beginning science teachers' perspectives of administrator support.
