Jan Baptista van Helmont

Jan Baptista van Helmont (1579 - 1644) was a Belgian noble who introduced the term gas. He published Ortus Medicinae (Origin of Medicine) and postulates the presence of carbon dioxide in the air. CITATION REQUIRED Most important, he was the first to demonstrate the law of conservation of mass.
