The Chemistry Book

Physical properties

  1. Physical properties can be observed or measured without changing the composition of matter.
  2. Physical properties are used to observe and describe matter.
  3. Physical properties include: appearance, texture, color, odor, melting point, boiling point, density, solubility, and polarity.

Physical changes

  1. A physical change takes place without any changes in molecular composition.
  2. The same element or compound is present before and after the change.
  3. The same molecule is present through out the changes.
  4. Physical changes are related to physical properties since some measurements require that changes be made.

Chemical properties

  1. Chemical properties of matter describe its "potential" to undergo some chemical change or reaction because of its composition.

Chemical changes

  1. The rearrangement of elements within a chemical reaction, creating a new element or compound.
