The Chemistry Book

The Celsius temperature scale was previously known as the centigrade scale. The scale is based on powers of 10 in which the freezing point of water is set to 00C and the boiling point of water is 1000C. The unit of temperature is called a degree, symbolized with a superscripted symbol which looks like a zero and followed by a capital letter C.

The temperature scale is named after the Swedish astronomer Anders Celsius (1701–1744), who developed a similar temperature scale two years before his death. Celsius, though, used an inverted set of points for boiling and freezing points for water. For example, he set 0° as the boiling point of water.
